About Samata Sarana

At Samata Sarana, we are driven by a profound purpose: make a meaningful impact on the lives of the most marginalized and vulnerable members of our community. Our journey began in 1988, inspired by the vision of Rev. Sister. Bernie Silva, the founder and the guidance of Father. Joe de Mel. From those humble beginnings, we have grown into a person-oriented, socially-based spiritual and charitable organization.

Our mission is clear; to restore dignity, provide hope, and empower individuals, one person at a time. We believe in the inherent worth of every human being, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through education, healthcare, nutrition, and compassionate care, we strive to break the cycle of deprivation and offer opportunities for a brighter future.

Founding of Samata Sarana

Samata Sarana was established by St. Bernie, inspired through prayer guided by Fr. Joe de Mel, her Spiritual Director. The organization’s foundation is rooted in a deep commitment to addressing the needs of the marginalized and restoring their human dignity

Formal Registration and Recognition

Samata Sarana took a big step toward formal recognition and registration. It was officially registered as an NGO with the Department of Social Services, establishing its status as a charitable eorganization. It was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and granted a license to operate. It’s commitment to the mission is further recognized when it became an Approved Charity by Act of Parliament.

Relocation and Collaboration with USAID

In 1992, Samata Sarana faces the challenge of relocating from it’s temporary, rented location at a De La Salle Brothers property. Collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development, USAID proves to be instrumental in supporting the organization during this transition. The move marks a significant milestone in the organization’s journey of providing multifaceted services to the marginalized.

Inauguration of the New Building

This year witnessed the solemn opening and blessing of the new premises on the reclaimed landfill site provided by His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando. This event symbolized the organization’s unwavering commitment to its mission and its remarkable journey from humble beginnings to a substantial presence in the community.

Continuing Impact and Transformation

In the present day, Samata Sarana continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the marginalized. Our multifaceted services encompass education, healthcare, nutrition, and support for the elderly and young, creating positive change within the community. Samata Sarana remains dedicated to its core mission of providing hope, care and opportunities to those facing adversity daily.

COLOMBO'S INNER CITIES

About Mutwal

Mutwal, located in Colombo, serves as a central point connecting four slum communities: De La Salle Sea Beach, Bloemendhal Railway Line, Mosque Lane, and Kimbulawela. This strategic location is crucial because residents in these areas often grapple with significant challenges stemming from urban poverty. Overcrowded living conditions, insufficient infrastructure, limited access to education and healthcare, and economic hardships are some of the difficulties these communities face.

Mutwal, at the heart of it all, provides a lifeline through Samata Sarana's services, offering education, healthcare, nutrition, and elderly support. It symbolizes the convergence of these communities and represents the hope and empowerment that Samata Sarana brings to marginalized individuals. It's a shared space where positive change unfolds, fostering unity and collective progress among residents.
